Boarding and Training

J-Mar offers obedience training in two venues. First, we do private lessons either at J-Mar or at your home. Depending on the goals of the owner and the aptitude of the dog, three or more private lessons may be necessary.
Secondly, we offer a board and train. This is a great format for people whose schedules do not permit group classes. It is a wonderful convenience to leave on vacation and come home to a well-trained pet.
Jean and Joe will work with your dog for a three week period. During this time, the dog will be trained in basic obedience, including walking on a leash (without pulling), coming when he is called, doing a sit-stay and a down-stay, stop jumping up on people, etc. If there are any other behavior problems, they will be addressed also.
The dog must be at least 6 months old to participate in the board and train format. A dog younger than that has little retention of the lessons so that it is not cost effective.
During the last week that the dog is in training, a video is made of a lesson. This gives the owner a reference tool once the dog is at home. Jean also does a lesson with owner when the dog is ready to go home. The dog will respond identically to the owner as it does to Jean before it is allowed to go home. After two weeks, Jean will contact the owner again and either go to their home or have them come to J-Mar for a follow-up lesson. This will insure that the dog and his owner are "on the same page."
Arrangements must be made well in advance for board and train. Please contact J-Mar for information and availability.
J-Mar also has a complete agility equipment set-up that is available for rent with or without instruction. We recommend that new trainers complete at least the Level One group class at IPOC (IPOCLakeland.org) since the equipment and instruction is geared toward the beginner dog and handler team.
